Standard 6.2: All students will know, understand and appreciate the values and principles of American democracy and the rights, responsibilities and roles of a citizen in the nation and the world. Standard 6.3: All students will demonstrate knowledge of world history in order to understand life and events in the past and how they relate to the present and future.

Objectives: |
Students will:
- Read and/or listen to the book Soldier's Heart: Being the Story of the Enlistment and Due Service of the Boy Charley Goddard in the First Minnesota Volunteers by Gary Paulson and discuss it literally and analytically.
- Research a branch of the United States Armed Forces within a cooperative group of students.
- Present facts about the branch of the military that their group researched.
- Recreate the seal for the branch they researched and describe what the symbols on the seal stand for.
- Take notes about the various branches of the military presented by fellow classmates.
- Name the five branches of the United States Armed Forces.
- Recall at least three facts about each branch of the military.
