The Five Senses

Purpose:

To provide a means for students to visually relate descriptions from the novel to each of the five senses: vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

Introduction:

Students can use this graphic organizer to clearly identify which of the five senses are being described in a particular novel. The students can use the completed graphic organizer to assist with writing activities or to study for a test.

Steps for Use with Audio Books:

  1. Show the students an example of the completed Five Senses Graphic Organizer.
  2. Listen to or read the selected text.
  3. When the listening/reading is completed, select one character or scene from the novel to analyze for descriptions that relate to the five senses.
  4. Students can work individually or in small groups to complete the graphic organizer. When the students complete the graphic organizers, pair up the students and have them share their descriptions with each other.
